Beautiful beaches, family resorts and great diving experiences – Philippines travelers looking for just those three things can’t stopover without visiting the small but beautiful 30,000-inhabitant city of Moalboal. Located on the west coast of Cebu Island, Malboal can be reached roughly between 2.5 to 3 hours by taxi or van from Cebu City, this highly desirable community boasts many exciting spots for divers and snorkelers, a paradise like white sand beach, beautiful accommodations and cozy bars, restaurants and pubs to party.
Panagsama Beach And White Beach
The most beautiful resorts, guesthouses and accommodations are not in the center of Moalboal, but on Panagsama Beach and White Beach. Both beaches are only a few kilometers from the city center and easy to reach by tricycle or motorbike. While White Beach is fine-sanded, Panagsama Beach is rocky and stones. A strong typhoon is said to have simply blown away the white sands of Panagsama a few decades ago.
Especially in Panagsama, also known as the “Dive Village”, visitors can immerse themselves in a very special world with a very special atmosphere. Locals, divers and expats from all over the world live together harmoniously. There are also some nice restaurants and bars and a little bit of nightlife – for those who like to turn night into day.
Badian, Kawasan Falls And Lambug Public Beach
About 20 km south of the city lies the municipality of Badian. This is becoming more and more popular as it is home to the beautiful Kawasan Falls and the enchanting Lambug Public Beach. If you are in Moalboal for a few days, you should not miss out on those two destinations in Badian.
With The Motorbike To The Kawasan Falls
Especially on a rented motorbike a trip to the Kawasan Falls is a real adventure. These waterfalls are among the most beautiful in the Philippines with the Tinago Falls in Iligan, the Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, the Can-umantad Falls in Candijay and the Cambugahay Falls on Siquijor. In addition, the coastal road from Moalboal to Badian is beautiful and already a great experience in itself.
Anyone who has been in Badian before and has good level of fitness should definitely consider the Kawasan Canyoneering. Only with the Kawasan Canyoneering (or Kawasan Canyoning or Badian Canyoning) visitors can perceive and experience an almost magical waterfall in its complete beauty. This adventure takes about three hours and usually costs between US$30 and US$50 per person depending on the guide you choose.
Diving And Snorkeling In Moalboal
An adventure of a special kind is diving and snorkeling in Moalboal. The many different dive spots are exciting, diverse and among the best in the Philippines. Divers can explore steep walls, sloping slopes and flat, sandy sections equally.
Huge Variety Of Marine Animals
The variety of different creatures is enormous. Sea turtles, harlequin shrimp, nudibranchs, imperator shrimp, ghost fish, snipe knife fish, sardine swarms and many bizarre small-scale marinelife are waiting to be discovered. Every now and then greets a gigantic large whale shark.
Fascinating are also the gorgonian fields as well as the many beautiful coral and sponge formations near Moalboal.
Beautiful Dive Spots Galore
Especially northwest and west of the peninsula, on which Moalboal is located, divers can explore many different dive spots in their colorful beauty. These include the Marine Sanctuary, White Beach Point, Kasai Point, Panagsama Reef, Talisay Point, Tongo Sanctuary, Sampaguita Point and many other fascinating spots.
A diving trip to Pescador Island is especially worth it. This small island impresses with a charming reef and wonderful coral gardens. Not only for divers, but also for snorkelers Pescador Island is very well suited. One should, however, take into account that there can be jellyfish every now and then. In general, a wetsuit for snorkelers makes perfect sense, as well as special bathing respectively snorkeling shoes in combination with fins.
Recommended Resorts In Moalboal
As a regular I enjoy going to the same place Magic Island Dive Resort. This Dutch-run dive resort is located in the south of the peninsula and is well maintained. In addition, the house reef is a very nice. Furthermore, I can also highly recommend the Dolphin House Moalboal as well as the Kasai Village Dive & Spa Resort.
