Adidas lost no time in pushing their way into the metaverse, from popular sporting leagues to popular sporting gear. In a literal sense. They introduced their Into The Metaverse NFT line in December 2021, and all 30,000 NFTs sold out within hours, earning the business around $22 million in sales. Adidas Has Entered The Metaverse.
On the 16th of December 2021, they announced their official partners – Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comics, and GMoney (a pseudonymous crypto enthusiast) – and launched their official app.
It wasn’t just digital items for sale. A purchase of their limited edition Into The Metaverse NFT was also tied to special physical gear such as Adidas’ Bored Ape NFT’s sweatshirt and tracksuit, as well as yet-to-be-announced digital activities. They also capitalized on their target audience’s favored social media platforms, introducing a dedicated Discord channel for collectors to speak and connect.
With Adidas suggesting that this is only the beginning of their effort into NFTs, it will be interesting to watch how they capitalize on the sneakerhead audience’s hardcore excitement to build on rarity, exclusivity, and community.
